Tyre condition (including tread depth) | ✔ |
---|---|
Brake operation | ✔ |
Structural condition (rust is not allowed in certain areas) | ✔ |
Lights | ✔ |
Glazing (is your windscreen safe?) | ✔ |
Windscreen washers and wipers | ✔ |
Doors (do they open and close safely?) | ✔ |
Safety belts (must not be damaged or overly faded; buckles must work properly) | ✔ |
Airbags (if fitted) | ✔ |
Speedometer (must be working) | ✔ |
Steering and suspension (must be safe and secure) | ✔ |
Exhaust (there must be no leaks and the exhaust must not be smoky or louder than the original exhaust system) | ✔ |

A WOF is not a pre-purchase inspection. It doesn't include many areas of a vehicle's condition. For example it doesn't check:
Engine, clutch, gearbox, and differential condition | ✘ |
---|---|
Lubricant levels and condition | ✘ |
Paintwork condition and some rust in non-structural areas | ✘ |

Common Warrant of Fitness questions
What is a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) inspection?
A Warrant of Fitness inspection is an annual check to ensure that your vehicle meets the required safety standards as set by the New Zealand Transport Agency. It’s illegal in New Zealand to drive a car that doesn’t meet WOF requirements or doesn’t display a valid WOF label at all times.
How long does my Warrant of Fitness certification last?
For older vehicles you have to get a warrant of fitness check every:
- 12 months if your vehicle was first registered anywhere in the world on or after 1 January 2000; and
- 6 months if your vehicle was first registered anywhere in the world before 1 January 2000.
Where can I get a Warrant of Fitness inspection?
Selected Tony’s Tyre & Auto Care locations can perform Warrant of Fitness inspections on your car, van or 4x4. All Tony’s Tyre & Auto Care locations are also MTA-assured, which means we comply with the NZ automotive industry’s highest standards of customer service and professionalism.
What happens if I fail my next WOF?
If your vehicle fails a WOF inspection you cannot drive it on the road unless you’re taking it somewhere to get it repaired immediately or get a new WOF – and it’s safe to do so. If your vehicle passes, the inspector will apply the WOF label to the inside of your front windscreen, on the driver’s side. Book your next Warrant of Fitness inspection at your nearest Tony’s Tyre & Auto Care before the expiry date on this label.
